Subaru Forrester - the 4WD we used to move around on old logging trails running thru the forest. Parking and walking tends to be the most effective to approach forest birds. Generally we just stay in a spot that looks promising and wait, making sure insect repellent has been applied. Where streams and swamps have to be crossed on foot leech stockings are useful.
