As nearly as I can figure out, both the large flat structures, and the smaller ones, are part of the flowering apparatus of this type of hydrangea. If anyone has more information on this, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks to this web site, I found out what's going on here. The large flat structures are the remains of sterile, showy flowers, and the smaller structures are the remains of fertile flowers. I
